Some Interesting Facts about Barista Culinary Education

Part of one’s culinary education to become a barista is to know the type of coffee grinder for french press since many believe ground size affects the flavor of a brew.

The contention is that since French press uses direct immersion, the method subjects the cofffee beans to longer extraction. In which case, it would be better to use a grinder that can grind the coffee beans coarsely, as larger grinds tend to slow down the extraction process. Bear in mind that over extraction of coffee beans will result to a bitter brew and will have a level of acidity that could overwhelm.

French Press vs. Drip Machine<>/strong

A French press as opposed to a drip machine has a built-in metal mesh that is tolerant of the essential oils that pass through and form part of the aromatic extraction. Some French press machines have metal meshes that allow the use of medium ground coffee beans, to which brewing then starts with stirring for four minutes and then continue brewing for five up to seven minutes more.

Others warn that fine coffee ground is likely to produce coffee that is cloudy, not unless the French press has a finer filter mesh that is fine enough to retain screen or silty. You may think that finer coffee will seep through the filter screen. Quality French press pots have a screen fine enough to hold-on to finer, medium-sized coffee grounds.

A drip machine on the other hand, uses a paper filter, which absorbs and prevents the essential oils from dripping. Less coarse grounds work well for drip machines in which faster extraction of oils and flavor -producing soluble compounds but tempered by a paper filter..Expert baristas argue that a brewed coffee’s flavor depends mainly on the essential oil and other soluble, flavor-producing oluble but should not be overextracted.

NIH Study Says Filtered Coffee Brew is a Healthier Option

Many are interested to find out which coffee brewing method poses as a healthier option. The concern has been provided with an answer by one of the studies conducted at the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

The study specifically aimed to establish, which brewing method, filtered or unfiltered, can be associated with lower mortality. It does not come as a surprise that the unfiltered method is linked to higher mortality. Hospital patients who were admitted for cardiovascular diseases are into drinking unfiltered coffee. Those who drink filtered coffee or who didn;t drink coffee at all appeared to have lower mortality rate. As it is, the paper filter prevents coffee drinkers from imbibing molecules that can cause oxidative stress and inflammation.

GOP Votes to Block Plan to Waive Student Loans

Last Wednesday, the bill that would revoke US President Joe Biden’s plan for student debt relief will proceed to the Senate as most Republicans voted in agreement. The bill that would block the plan to waive around $20,000 worth of student loans was passed with 218-203 votes. There were also at least two democrats who sided with the Republicans in favor of the bill.

Americans who would benefit from the plan are students who have less than  $125,000 as their individual income. The decision of the Supreme Court regarding the repeal is to be expected before June ends.

Republicans Determined to Stop the Mass Student Debt Relief Plan

Republicans are set on keeping the mass student debt relief plan from happening. Aside from the debt-relief block, the bill would entail resumption of student loan payment collection. The collection will include settlements for student loans that were temporarily postponed due to the global pandemic.

Once the Supreme Court passes judgment on the legislation, student loan payments will resume two months after June 30.

In favor of the repeal, Chairwoman of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce Rep. Virginia Foxx, R-N.C. believed that this would affect working citizens the most, as this would advance inflation.

Last month, the Republican party also voted against Biden’s plan of increasing the debt ceiling.
